The Warrior Born

I'm still playing with titles. Perhaps the title won't reveal itself to me until later. Anyway, I thought that I would give you all a quick peek into the very beginnings.

He didn't feel the pain in his fingers. He didn't feel the ache in his legs. He had lost the sense of pain many long hours ago. Or was it days? He couldn't recall. His throat was as dry as the cracked earth that he lay on and his body couldn't give up any more moisture to change that. He believed he could smell the moisture in the air. He thought that if he breathed hard enough his body could pull the water out of the air and sooth his cracked throat. It hadn't worked though. Nothing had. He knew that he was going to die there, in the barren wasteland and no one would be the wiser. There didn't even seem to be any scavengers alive to feed on him. He hadn't seen any carcasses at all. He only wondered if he had led a worthwhile life. If only he could remember any aspect of it - something - anything to carry him into the afterlife. Or his next life. Or whatever it was that he believed in but couldn't remember.

He wasn't sure when it happened, but the darkness that had been creeping in at the edge of his vision managed to overtake him and a blissful coolness followed.

Everything was so dark. And those voices - what were they saying? He couldn't understand a single word, and while he was certain that his eyes were open he couldn't see anything. Suddenly realizing that he was blind, he bolted upright, his hands flailing about in his panic. He felt a sickening crunch as one of his hands found something flesh covered and delicate. The voices all around him responded immediately - jibjabbering quickly - each trying to speak out over the others. An acrid smell struck his nostrils and the voices faded as his body slumped on itself as he lost consciousness again.

As always - I would love any feedback any of you would like to offer.
