This seems like very valid criticism of companies that clearly pay for other things and expect not to pay for art. By all means, that's bullshit.
But bashing on the zine writer who's looking for an artist who wants to share in the same no-dollars *she's* earning (actually she's probably losing money if she's self-publishing)... that rings false to me.
There's nothing wrong with saying "I'm doing XYZ project for the sheer fun of it / experience / whatever, and I'd love it if someone of a more graphical bent wanted to contribute to that side of things in the same spirit. And it might conceivably help both of us down the line."
No, you won't land Dave McKean that way (at least not someone who has already reached that point in their career), but if you don't claim to already be Neil Gaiman, I don't see the injustice.
