In which Mr. L rambles about online journals - because yeah - he's that meta dood.

I have several journals. Some online and some offline. Yes, that is multiple online journals, and no - a couple of them are not for public consumption. Of the online variety, more than one is on a different service. Each one was set up at different times, and for different reasons (though I have long since forgotten what those reasons were).

It's that very thought though that has me pondering them now. Why did I originally set them up? Did I think that there was something that I would want to blog about that I would't want the world to read? That's easy - make it a private post on LJ and I'm done. No, I don't really think that's it. Is it some feature or function that I thought would be amazing?

If I'm honest about this, I would have to say no here too. I love Livejournal and all it's vast capabilities. What's more, it doesn't feel complicated, but not at the cost of features. I think that - as sad as this may be - I signed up for the other journals because they caught my eye. Something about the way that they marketed themselves worked. There's a little part of me that is very bothered by that concept. It's as though I see it like 'they won' when I buy into some company's marketing.

The crux to that is the fact that I then feel like I somehow 'lost'. I guess I see all advertizing and marketing like some kind of a ploy. *I suddenly just got a mental image: "It's a traaaaaap!"*

Anyway - it's as though I'm giving in to charlatans if I buy a product based on their advertizing. Yes I realize that's a load of bunk. It's the glory of the American system that "He with the Best Marketing Wins" (all other things being equal of course). I really do believe in a free economy and in the survival of the fitest in the business world. I think that it make you get strong or die. I actually kinda like that. So why does it feel like I've failed if I buy into a product because it's well marketed? Especially when it's a product I haven't been disappointed in?

Oh hell... time to stop thinking about this right this second. Bring on the weekend Muthafu&*er!

We all like the shiny. Is it worth fighting the urge to give in to the shiny? When somebody is able to screw you out of piles of dough, sure. When they merely get your eyeballs for a minute now and again... eh. It's inefficient to angst about it. We all have better battles to fight.

My blogs:

1. LiveJournal
2. The WWW FAQ itself, which has an RSS feed and is even syndicated on LJ by maybe twelve people
3. Innards, an offshoot of the WWW FAQ for questions which are not insane but aren't really frequent, which actually reads like a blog but has no feed yet
4. A blog on a dating site in which I could write dirty stuff but mostly use dirty subject lines as punny hooks for something else, in hopes of meeting girls

I tried treating my myspace blog as a roller derby fanblog for a while but I didn't keep up with it. Now that I've transmogrified into a band, I should start blogging about songs there, so people can find more than four of them.

Oh? I didn't know that the FAQ had a feed. What's the name? I'd like to add it to my flist.
