Fate. Destiny. Karma. I'm not what you might call a believer, but I do sometimes marvel at the timing of things.

So I was all excited. My buddy Russ is in an a capella group in NYC and tonight is their first show. What's more, even though it has slipped my mind until it was almost too late, I remembered that there's a 'cheap bus to NYC' available from downtown Wilmington.

I jump on gotobus.com and sure enough - there are tickets available for a couple different times that would get me into the city in plenty of time to get to the venue with time to spare. Hell - I'd have enough time to grab a quick bite before the show. [livejournal.com profile] lotusanddragon was headed up too, but he elected to head to Philly and catch the Megabus.

I ping my brother and his wife who are kind enough to offer to put me up for the night. I buy my ticket. I race through the work that I have to get done and then to the apartment to throw together an overnight bag. In the end, I get to the bus stop with about 15 minutes to spare.

And then I notice the sign in the window that is a notice from the City of Wilmington that the business is closed until it can pass inspection.

Awesome.

There are several of us who have purchased tickets online and we discuss it and decide that it might still show. After all - just becaus that location f the business is closed, there's no reason that the bus can't still do the route, and since you can purchase tickets online...

Yeah. Not so much. I spent a brisk hour waiting for a bus that never showed. What's more, that meant that I missed my window to get up to NYC by driving myself.

So I glumly get back to my car and head back to the apartment. I'm so annoyed with the way it panned out that I almost don't notice Peggy.

Peggy lives in one of the assisted living apartment buildings in my neighborhood. She'd been out grocery shopping and was walking home. Apparently she has some kind of ailment which causes shortness of breath and when she felt a bout coming on, she tried to hurry to a nearby bus stop bench to catch her breath. That's when she caught her foot on a manhole cover and went for a tumble.

When I noticed her, she was already on the ground, looking a little dazed, and her groceries were splayed about her. I pulled over, threw on the hazards, and went to see what I could do. A couple (who probably split the age between Peggy and myself - maybe in their late 50s) also showed up and helped me get her to the bus stop bench she had been headed for.

She was more or less alright save for a nasty scratch on her hand and some pain in her knees, so I helped her collect her groceries and walked her home. Nice lady that Peggy.

Sucks that I missed Russ' show, but I'm glad the timing worked out.

FRAAAAAK!

Has anyone else tried recently to upload an animate GIF to LJ?

I tried to modify my TechnoViking icon (seen here), but after I select the file to upload, the only option is 'proceed' which takes you to a screen where you crop your image. I'm pretty sure this process dumps the animation and keeps only whatever you crop. Thus, my animation becomes a still.

Anyone else run into this?

Wow kids - I was pleased as punch to read this article posted to life hack.

While the subject matter might be intimidating to folks, I would say that the less you feel you know about art the more you should read it. It's a short piece, easy to digest, and pretty damn solid to my way of thinking. I highly recommend it.

Melange Lavonne's video: Gay Bash.

I like the tune. The lyrics are a bit... well, to be honest I think that they're a little unpolished. However, the message is strong and good, and I think that it bears repeating, so I'm posting it here. Thanks to the goodly one who pointed it out.

Next there's the Craigslist Postings for Free Artwork. The following link takes you to something that some of the artist-for-hire crowd are touting as 'great' and 'must reads'. I can't say that I claim the same. I agree that the concept is good and valid. I agree that 'spec work' prepares us all for anal probing of the highest order, but I think that the rant is just that - it's a rant. It has the same kind of blind-faith 'data' that accompanies every AOHELL forward I've ever thrown in my virtual trash bin. I'm pretty sure that it might be just the same sort of 'email gathering bullshit' that they are. So why am I passing it on? Because I expect all of you to be smart enough to not give any information to folks through something like this.

I might just have to write a paraphrased document with some legitimate information. Something that shows illustrators and the like as something more than a bunch of zealots - misguided as well as misunderstood.

So while I'm on the subject of newbs and the intarwebs - I've been thinking. I've been thinking that [personal profile] boutell  's amazing web faq is a great thing and should be promoted. I wish more people would look through the vast array of information there (and elsewhere) on the web and just plain educate themselves. It's really not tough people.

I am currently of the opinion that Facebook is the shit. All of the (worthwhile) shit that basic myspace does (ie- not the music/comedy sections) and more without all the teeny bopper 'look at my annoying animations and bullshit sound files' crap. Just information, comments, groups, and pictures. Data. Good solid data. And the ability to share it. Novel concept that. The closest I would get to complaining about facebook is that it seems like it was built by really slick programmers who could use a hand in the interface design department - but I'll take quality over flashy packaging any day.

Encountered a well dressed little man down in the lobby while his mom was talking with security.

"How do you get all the way up there?" he asked, pointing to the upper floors where the bank's top dawgs sit.

"Well I gues you climb all the stairs." was my oh-so-witty reply.

So the little man stood up, moved to the base of the steps and got ready to climb.

...At least until his mom saw what he was up to.
