Two simple questions:

1. Who's your favorite superheo of all time. You can pick only one here.

2. Why? What about the hero in number 1 makes them so amazing to you as an individual.

Discuss amongst yourselves. I'll check back shortly.

Silver Surfer. Partially because the whole character is so bizarre - he's, like, this intergalactic surfer. On this surfboard, ya know, dude. Oh, and he's all silver. Whoah...

But mostly because of his angst - his willingness to sacrifice himself to save his planet, the way he's trapped on earth, far away from his home and his love... he's a real tragic figure.

I'd have to say, My personal favorite has always been Green Lantern (Hal Jordan).

Honestly, I can't put a finger on really. I guess I like the idea of a normal person with a power ring that can do all these amazing things.

Is that really that simple? I have two.

For 'real' superheros, Spiderman. For the combination of action and wit and the humanity of the hero. Sure, he had powers, but his suit tore, he got beat up and he didn't have any supernatural protections. He was a normal guy who could do some extraordinary things, but in the end he was just a guy facing off against some pretty nasty situations with nothing but a set of tights, some sticky string and a sharp tongue.

However, my secret favorite was the Badger. He appeared in First Comics back in the 80's and 90's. Your basic kung-fu Dr. Doolittle, he was a master of dozens of obscure martial arts and could speak with animals. A champion of the animals, he took out his anger on whomever threatened bird or beast anywhere... and the occasional rude fast-food clerk or jaywalker. Why? Because the Badger was one of seven personalities of Norbert Sykes, a multiple personality. The others were a cocky black pimp (Sykes was white), a little girl, a murderous lumberjack called Lucky Pierre, an effete English gentleman, a delicate domestic engineer who liked doing housework and poor damaged Norbert himself. The comic itself was full of EXCEPTIONAL weirdness, but the exploration of the idea of a superhero being two people (is Bruce Wayne the man or the mask?), taken to the extreme was highly enjoyable.

Superman. As powerful as a god, as loving as a human can be, innocent yet still clever, socially awkward, a writer, an alien trying to fit in. if superheros are supposed to protect, there is no one I would rather have on earth to protect us.

That's a tough one. At times I've been all about the Flash. And speaking strictly in terms of cool powers, I'm a big Iron Man fan. But the one I keep coming back to, over and over... The Batman.

I know it's a cop-out to pick one one of the big three, but a favorite is a favorite. I like the fact that he doesn't have any superhuman abilities. I like that he gets by on intelligence as much or more than skills and gadgets. Many of the best written stories in comics history have been Batman stories, and the costume and setting make for some killer artwork.

It's gotta be Bats.
