Swimmin!

Just a quick note to pat myself on the back. I arrived in town (NH) this past Monday to do some training for work. Because I'm going to the same location for work every day this week, I decided to just stay at the same hotel for the whole period.

The hotel has a pool.

Well, most of the hotels I stay at do. I make it a point, but now I'm getting sidetracked.

I've been meaning to start a swimming regiment to get myself into some kind of shape. Driving all day every day - much like sitting in a cubical every day - isn't doing my body any good.

After a chit chat with [livejournal.com profile] xtingu, who was good enough to call me on my bullshit, I finally got my butt in gear.

Oh, and I should be clear up front - this is NOT an Olympic size pool. Quite the contrary. I paced it out, and I'm guestimating that it's in the ballpark of 40 feet long. Still, this has been the breakdown so far:

Monday Night: 70 laps.
Tuesday Morning: 50 laps
Tuesday Night: 30 laps (ran out of time)
Wednesday Morning: screwed up - didn't have time to swim
Wednesday Night (just now): 100 laps

It's only been three days, but I'm pretty proud of those numbers. That said, I'm intentionally NOT figuring out the calories burned etc because I'm afraid I will be discouraged. Instead, my goal is to just keep increasing those numbers over time.

First though, I have to keep it up enough to make it my regular routine.

It's all about making it part of the routine.

I bumped up my time to one hour even.

How many calories? Not sure. The display stopped advancing after 999. :)

(Yes, I could do the math. Don't wanna.)

Yeah - so that would be another 50 minute session on the elliptical. Don't know how much I trust the computer in the HUD to be accurate, but it says I burned 910 calories.

So that doesn't suck.

Had a good night last night. Stayed at the office to keep myself from getting distracted. Wrote a couple posts for Dragonbones/NaNoWriMo. Got a call to photographers out that I've been meaning to write for a while.

When I got home, I did the smart thing and put my sweats on right awa and headed down to the gym. I've had the idea in my head for a while now that 1 hour/day is the right amount of time to spend doing some sort of workout. As I was currently getting 0 aerobic exercise, that's been my starting point. I've been speed walking on the lowest setting for the elliptical, and last night I hit the 50 minute mark.

When I can consistently hit one hour (preferably on a harder setting and at least jogging) I'll be happy. I'm making it a point to not pay attention to my weight. I figure that I'll know when I'm healthier.

Just a quick not to say that I hit the elliptical again this morning, so we're 2/2 so far.

25 minutes
2 miles
440 calories

I want to get down to 10 minute miles. I was there back when I was going to the gym regularly, and it seems entirely reasonable. Plus - I feel like that's a good point to start bumping the time up.

Just to quick jot down some thoughts about the weekend before I get too far removed from it:

Friday:
*Left late. Really late by comparison to the plan. We intended to leave town at 4pm. We didn't leave until after 7pm. The good news is that I got to pick up my new prescription glasses for the weekend. Score.
*Arrived well after dark. Had an interesting time setting up camp. We haven't set up camp in a long while - let alone in the dark. Managed though - we got skillz.

Saturday:
*This was the long hike (14 miles? 16?). It was hot. I ran out of water. Twice. Beautiful trail and countryside. [livejournal.com profile] lotusanddragon  and I got some good bullshit time in. Found the trail 'not so remote' (despite his coworker's warning).
*Picked the Best Campsite Evar™ and set camp. Lerved it there. Could have spent the whole weekend at that site and not been even a little upset.

Sunday:
*Slow start to the day. We enjoyed a leasurely breakfast and playing with the fire despite the damp terrain/wood/everything from the rain the night before. (We stayed blessedly dry in the tent.)
*Since we got such a late start (though we weren't upset by that) we decided to do a shorter hike - a little over 4miles in a loop (there were limited options for short - let alone short loop.)
*We found ourselves off the trail (gee - that never happens... /end sarcasm). Found a stream where we did some splashing about, then got back to the trail.
*Heavy storm rolled in while we were doing the last 1/3 to 1/2 of the loop. Soaked everything through pretty good - which I found thoroughly invigorating.

Pics and stuff later when I get them off [livejournal.com profile] lotusanddragon 's camera and my phone and get them uploaded.

Theme for the weekend? Ticks. Lots and lots of ticks.

Had a great time and looking forward to next month's trip!

Bike to the Bay 2008 - Prep Day 2
"Wow, way to drum up a ton of enthusiasm there big guy."

"Piss off."

"That's more like it."

"Mmm."

As my legs lock up under my desk because they were busy atrophy-ing before I made them move for a change, I thought that I would review the day thus far. (Side note: would that be 'undergoing the process of atrophy'? Or maybe atrophiing? [livejournal.com profile] drjohn , I'm looking at you here bud...).

Thus far:
1. Productive Day at Wukr: Nothing amazing, but I got to put out some fires and make some people happy and even (shock! gasp! the horror!) possibly improve a process or two. Hey - I'm not too hard to please. I just like to see improvement.

2. A (Brief) Ride: I'm no cyclist. Hell, my body hardly seems to know how to get out of its own way these days. It's because of this that I'm actually pretty happy with the fact that I was able to handle the 5 mile ride I took tonight. I need to get better (and further) by the end of the week if I hope to be able to do anything like the 75 miles we are planning to cover, but I'm beginning to think that it's doable. It does feel good to be moving again. Makes me miss my motorcycle that much more though. ;)

Now, I think that I will work on some artwork.

Ok. So as some of you already know, Quito and I rearranged the Romper Roomâ„¢ and changed it into a work out space. One of the things we did was set up his trail bike on a stand so that it (in effect) become a stationary bike. Then we pointed it at a tv and hooked my PS2 up to it so we could play DVDs.

I wasn't sure how well it would work until just now.

I just rode that stationary bike for 77 minutes while I watched the movie Hellboy: Sword of Storms.

The movie was fun and kept me pretty solidly distracted. I won't pretend that I was going great guns the whole time, but (aside from a couple very brief pauses to stretch) I kept moving the whole time. When I was done, I was drenched with sweat and feeling thoroughly used up - in a good way.

I'm looking forward to Wednesday. Not sure what I'll rent though.
