In something that alarmingly seems like productivity, I finished another strip for 1100. By all means - check it out and let me know what you think!

So you've probably all forgotten the little experiment that I started back in February.

Well I didn't. It was driving me nuts that I never did finish the portraits that I had promised. I had plenty of steam to do an hour on [livejournal.com profile] lafemmekatia's image.

I slowed down a bit and lost a bit of drive while working on [livejournal.com profile] theseitz's image of Rodney Dangerfield. I sucked it up and worked on him for a little over 1/2 hour. Poor Rodney. You've looked better buddy.

I have just finished (at long last) the image I promised for [livejournal.com profile] anisette_toast. I actually found this one coming together fairly quickly. There was a lot going on here tonight, and while I would think that should be an 'excuse' for why the image didn't turn out the way I wanted, it actually seemed to be the reverse. In just 1/2 hour (ok - maybe a touch more) I felt comfortable calling it a night.

I was thinking about doing some t-shirt designs. Mostly, I'm probably going to stick with my forte - tribal designs and the like. However, I have some pretty damn clever friends, so I thought that I would put the word out:

If any of you have an idea for a funny (or serious for that matter) shirt - let me know. If I like the idea, and I put it on a shirt, I'll (at least) buy one of the shirts for you, and you can brag to all of your friends that you came up with the idea!

The Dragonbones CrestSince my desktop has been down for a while now, I have been unable to finish the portraits I promised. Don't worry though - they're on their way. I've been spending the last several hours reformatting my desktop and installing fresh new XP stuff. I'm having a bit of a problem getting the sound to work, but I'll get there.

In the meantime, I've been drawing. I set up the drivers for my tablet on this laptop, and while it's not going to break any records for 'efficient use of resources', it will suffice to do a moderately small (read as: 'not print quality') image. Thus we have the thumbnail on the right. I look forward to hearing what you guys have to say about it. This may be the front page of the new version of my website. If so, it will likely have mouse-over effects etc for the different portions of the image (which would then link to different areas of the site).

Captain AmericaQuick Cap...

I did a 15 minute sketch of Captain America for the meme. I would have liked to spend more time on him, but since I put him off for so long already...

Maybe I'll clean him up later.

Rodneyhere's the latest work on the portraits...

I've done stage 1 (the first half hour) on [profile] theseitz's portrait of Rodney Dangerfield.

So far so good. Ol' Rodney sure had an easily recognizable face. My Dad would likely say "He's a living caricature." - and he'll be right. Those eyes make it hard to not just 'cheat' by focusing on them and leaving it alone. That, however, is not the point of the experiment. The idea is to create a decent portrait in 2 hours. Not simply to make the person recognizable.

At any rate - as always, I would love to get everyones' thoughts.

Oh, and don't forget about my survey!

Click for the Larger VersionWell kids, [profile] lafemmekatia's image is finally done. I find it frustrating that I have to force myself to sit down to do this sort of work - as if I were being paid for it - and when I actually get to it? I have a blast. The time flies, and I don't have nearly the problem doing the work that I expect to. I think that it's a bit of the old 'dentists' chair scenerio'.

Many thanks to [profile] kar0na  for getting me the picture since [profile] lafemmekatia's been busy.

I learned a lot while doing the image. I stumbled through different techniques and found myself saying things like "Oh... that's not so hard..." and similar thoughts throughout the process. It's starting to make me think that I have a minor issue with anxiety. Whatevah.

Now it's time to get crackin' on [profile] theseitz's image - good ol' Rodney:

The Column...in my more 'regular stuff'. Here's an image of the Column members. I think that this new wave of 'focus' is showing - even in this sort of thing. The characters feel a little more solid. I'm actually really psyched to keep working on this one, but I need to drop back to the portraits to get more work done on them. This might sound like complaining, but I should point out that I am loving the way things 'feel' since I've been doing these little experiments, so I'm in this to see it through.

I'll be doing more experiments thanks to the results I'm seeing from these.

lafemmekatia's image - stage 2Did some more work on [livejournal.com profile] lafemmekatia's image for my portrait experiment. There are ways that I see improvement, but I also think that I screwed a couple things up, and have to go back and fix them. Fortunately, this next stage is a one hour long session, so that gives me plenty of time to gent into the flow of things.

I'm trying not to jump the gun here. Part of this experiment is to get me to stick with an image until I've done what I set out to do, and I have to say that I'm fighting that urge now. My instinct is to do quick sketchwork, and if it's not where I want it to be? Drop it and move on. Hopefully I can get through a simple one more hour, and then I can sink my proverbial teeth into the next image.

As always, I would love to get all of your comments/thoughts/recommendations.

Tonight...

...I went to see Ghost Rider on my own. There's some itch that gets scratched when I go to the movies on my own. It's not something I want to do all the time, but every once in a while, it does me genuine good.

I loved the movie. That's at least one more reason I'm glad I went alone.

After the movie, I got to hang out with the lovely and always talented [livejournal.com profile] shellefly did some artwork, and now I'm here.

It's been a good day.

Supergirl!... or at least as done as she's getting. It's way too late for me to put more into this. I enjoyed the hell out of doing it though, and I think that I have made some forward progress. I have to say thanks here to [livejournal.com profile] dryponder for coming up with yet another great art meme. I mean really - how many folks are out there creating art memes?

Well... okay, there are probably quite a few. Perhaps it would be better so say: "How many people are out there creating art meme's that I want to take part in?" So anyway - thanks to [livejournal.com profile] dryponder for coming up with an art meme that was fun to do! See the list of other submissions here.

Oh, and for those of you who know her - no, the resemblance to my ex was entirely NOT intentional, though I think it works for what I was trying to do.

I have syndicated a few Craigslist art job listing feeds to LiveJournal if any of my artistic friends are interested:

Delaware Art Job Listings

Philadelphia Art Job Listings

Southern NJ Art Job Listings

I don't know how many of you will be interested, but thought that I would throw them up there as a PSA.

Thank you, drive through.

Did a 5 minute sketch of Ghost Rider in honor of the new movie starring Nick Cage. Let's all keep our fingers crossed that it's not going to blow chunks.

Also had the good fortune of hanging with the ever lovely [livejournal.com profile] shellefly tonight, and get a little hot Barne's and Noble action. Armed with our trusty laptops, we went to town. She knocked out some words and I... well... I'm working on something a little different. More soon.

[livejournal.com profile] xtingu had her first full day at the new gig. I won't steal her thunder, but sounds like it went pretty well. Everyone keep your fingers crossed that everything just keeps getting better - I think you'll all agree with me that she deserves it.

Alrighty. It's way past my bed time and here I am talking to you lunatics! I'm out of here like... something witty goes here!

Ganked this from [livejournal.com profile] kevin_b's journal and wanted a copy in my own to add it to my memories. Without further ado:

stage 4Stage Four: Touch Up/Clean Up - Yeah. I guess you could call it that, though it seems a bit deceptive. I spent another hour and a quarter on this bad boy, and I could easily spend a whole lot more on it. I'm not, but I could. Stick a fork in it, I'm calling it done (for now). I did have a lot of fun with it and I even got a little more daring at the end since Quito came in and gave me a few words of encouragement/advice. Overall, I would say (again) that the experiment was a success and I learned what I need to do to speed things up substantially. Why speed things up? Many reasons which I won't go into here, but suffice to say that if I want to make any kind of money through art, speed becomes a significant factor.

Now for my thoughts on the image itself (a critique, I guess - as though I was looking at someone else's image):

  • I like the boldness of the revised inking - I really love a solid bold 'outline' to help bring objects into alignment visually. I like how significantly that helps to make things 'pop'.
  • Overall I like the colors, but I think that the greens need some pretty significant help
  • It needs a background, but I knew that wasn't happening since I was constricting myself time-wise
  • I like that I look like me (sorta - just more beefy)
  • I like that both our heads are more or less aligned - not sure what that says symbolically or whatever, but I like it
  • The horns could use a LOT more detail, and I would like to rework the dragon's head a bit more (it's supposed to be based on the 'center skull' from my navigation menu)

I plan on doing some more of these in the future, though I find it strange that this project technically should have only taken me a little under 3 hours, and it feels like my whole day (except for my yummy meal out with [livejournal.com profile] xtingu and the boys) was dedicated to it.

Stage 3Stage Three: Colors - Dayam. I really wanted to complete the image in the allotted time, but more important than that was the idea of sticking with the time constraints. Thus, I give you this report of the progress I made. I'm going to see how much longer it's going to take me to actually finish the image, but clearly I needed more than the 45 minutes I had originally allocated. I guess I kinda knew that before I started this stage, but I figured I could just push myself more. I did push myself pretty good, and I think that I accomplished a lot given the speed with which I normally do my color work, so I think that it's fair to say that the experiment has been a pretty solid success. I've come to understand that there are times that I really just need to stop 'nit-picking' and get my butt in gear. Stop worrying about the details so early on - that's the main lesson learned. Now to just apply it more often...

...and to finish this image!

Stage Two - InkingClick here if you would like to go to the first post in this series.

Stage Two: Inking - Wow. I have to say that I really loved this stage. I found the image pulling together and becoming more 'tight' as if by magic. I found myself forced to make a single line to edge a form where I would normally be very 'sketchy'. I didn't have the time to be sketchy and refine it later. In fact, I had pretty much completely finished the image of me and had only 3/4 completed the head of the dragon when I realized that my time was over half gone. Also of note I love that I started to have the ability to 'hint at' a spot (like the dragon's toes) and have it flesh out very fast.

On to Stage Three!

Stage One Click here if you would like to go to the first post re: this experiment.

Okay, I've finished the raw sketchwork stage. Found it extremely difficult to keep myself to the 15 minute limit. Found myself thinking "but I don't have enough fleshed out for the inking stage" in reference to a wide range of parts to the image. This is all about time however, so I'm sticking to it. This is the result of the first stage. I will post a link to the WPE once the project is completed.
